Good News!  If you haven’t had a fire we are here with some tips on prevention and safety, so read below to get the 411 on how to avoid the chance of a fire.  And the good news is Prevention is Better than Cure.

Its like your parents always told you, and they were (and still are) right! The best way to be safe around an unexpected fire is to prevent one from occurring in the first place.  Follow these steps.

  1. Install Fire Alarms Everywhere: on all floors, in all rooms, EVERYWHERE. This is not a drill. You may think that smoke from a fire in the kitchen will travel to the fire alarm in the dining room, but are you sure you have that kind of time? More importantly, do you want to take that chance?
  2. TEST all Fire Alarms Once a Month: no matter what. Put it on the calendar. Does so-and-so always manage to set off the alarm when she or he attempts to cook dinner? You may think its okay to remove the batteries, but you also probably forget to put said batteries back in. This may seem tedious, time consuming, and like a useless activity, but what is the point of even having an alarm if it doesn’t work? Think of your fire alarms as you would your backup, battery operated alarm clock. How do you feel when you wake up late for work? Imagine that same feeling amplified but with smoke and high temperatures in your house.
  3. Have a plan: an escape plan, that is. More importantly, make sure every member of the household is aware of what said plan is. On average, once a house fire begins, you have only TWO minutes to leave the property in order to stay safe. Keep this factor in mind when planning your escape plan, and ensure that every resident realizes the importance of keeping themselves, not material possessions safe. Your book collection and childhood teddy bear do not hold as much value as yourself. With this in mind, the head of household should have all important documents in an easily accessible place in case a fire-flight emergency should arise. Such documents would include but are not limited to birth certificates, social security cards, proof of ownership in reference to vehicles, etc.
  4. Do You Smoke? Aside from the clear cut health drawbacks, do not smoke in your house. Anywhere in your house. And it is worth saying even though obvious, keep all lighters and matches away from children and in areas where they are not easily found by small hands.
  5. Kitchen safety. When you decided to play Iron Chef Kitchen Ninja starring yourself, family, and/or friends, make sure all players know where the fire extinguisher is located, and how to use it (PULL, SQUEEZE, and SWEEP!). Know how to put out a grease fire, and never leave the stove unattended when it is in use.
  6. Keep Your Electronics in Check: and not overheated or over crowded. Do not utilize outlets near water, and make sure that upon plugging in an electronic device, it is plugged all the way in the outlet (this helps to prevent sparks)!
